  • How Trump's foreign policies impact your portfolio
In the latest Trader Talk episode, where host Kenny Polcari and Dr. Scholl Foundation President and CEO Dan Mahaffee explore the geopolitical myths and realities shaping today’s markets. Broadcasting from the New York Stock Exchange, Polcari leverages decades of institutional experience to cut through the noise and help investors focus on what truly matters. Polcari opens by debunking the popular belief in imminent rate cuts—a comforting bedtime story for many investors. He points out that the economy isn’t collapsing: the labor market remains robust, wages are strong, and corporate earnings are mostly solid. Rate cuts, he explains, are not a gift but a tool for deep economic distress. Instead of banking on a Fed pivot, investors should base decisions on the actual data. Mahaffee brings a global perspective, delving into how geopolitical tensions—such as the European challenges and the ongoing conflict in Ukraine—intertwine with trade negotiations. He discusses critical mineral deals necessary for modern industries like semiconductors and drones, highlighting the delicate balance between national security and economic interests. Mahaffee also warns against relying on quick fixes, emphasizing that tariffs and reciprocal measures are tools for negotiation, not guaranteed solutions. Rounding out the episode, Polcari shares three essential market tips: tune into central bank briefings, analyze earnings beyond headline figures, and stay alert to geopolitical developments. And, as always, the show concludes with a nod to tradition—the Luncheon Club Lobster Roll, a market recipe steeped in NYSE history. Luncheon Club Lobster Roll Recipe Ingredients 1 lb. fresh lobster meat, steamed (Ask the grocery seafood counter to steam it if you like) Brioche roll, toasted and buttered Fresh lemon wedges ⅓ cup premium mayonnaise 2 tablespoons fresh lemon juice 2 tablespoons finely diced celery 1 tablespoon fresh chives, minced 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard Sea salt and white pepper (to taste) Fresh dill sprigs Butter lettuce leaves Potato chips (Cape Cod chips recommended) Steps Prepare the Sauce: In a small bowl, whisk together the mayonnaise, lemon juice, celery, chives, Dijon mustard, salt, and white pepper. Mix with Lobster: Gently combine the steamed lobster meat with the prepared sauce. Toast & Butter Rolls: Butter the brioche roll(s), then toast or griddle until golden. Assemble: Line the toasted roll with butter lettuce leaves.Spoon the dressed lobster onto the roll. Finish & Serve: Top with fresh dill. Add lemon wedges on the side. Serve with Cape Cod-style potato chips for extra crunch. Trader Talk with Kenny Polcari on Yahoo Finance delivers expert analysis and actionable insights. • How this family office ETF outperforms the S&P 500
What do market fundamentals, active ETF strategies, and global investing challenges have in common? They’re at the core of the latest Trader Talk episode, where host Kenny Polcari and guest Rob Haugen, a seasoned market maker now with River1 Asset Management, explore how to navigate today’s dynamic public markets. Broadcasting from the iconic New York Stock Exchange, Polcari leverages decades of institutional trading experience to help investors decode market behavior and capitalize on opportunities. Polcari kicks off by reminiscing about his early days on the trading floor, emphasizing that while a company’s fundamentals are crucial over the long term, short-term price movements are largely driven by supply and demand dynamics. “It’s not just about a company’s value—it’s about who’s buying and who’s selling,” Haugen notes. This insight underpins his active ETF strategy, which blends rigorous fundamental analysis with timely tactical moves guided by technical indicators like moving averages, RSI, and relative strength. Haugen also addresses global market considerations, cautioning investors about emerging markets—particularly China. He explains that while China presents opportunities, its stocks are fraught with “stroke-of-a-pen” risks due to sudden regulatory shifts, making Chinese ADRs a less attractive proposition compared to stable, developed markets like Europe and the United States. By focusing on sectors with strong inflows and robust pricing power, Haugen’s approach demonstrates how strategic positioning can turn market dislocations into long-term gains. Be sure to check out Kenny's recipe of the week below. Kenny’s Classic Bolognese Recipe Ingredients 2 tablespoons olive oil 2 tablespoons butter 1 cup diced onion 1 cup diced celery 1 cup diced carrot 4 cloves garlic, minced 1 pound ground beef (or half beef/half pork) 1 cup whole milk ¼ teaspoon nutmeg 1 cup white wine (Pinot Grigio recommended) 1 (28-ounce) can crushed “kitchen-ready” tomatoes 2 parmesan cheese rinds Salt and pepper (to taste) Steps Sauté Vegetables: In a large pot over medium heat, add the olive oil and butter. Once melted, stir in the onion, celery, and carrot. Season with salt and pepper. Sauté for about 10 minutes. Add Garlic: Stir in the minced garlic and cook for another 2 minutes. Brown the Meat: Add the ground meat, season with salt and pepper, and break it up with a fork. Cook until it’s fully browned. Simmer with Milk: Pour in the cup of milk. Lower the heat and simmer, stirring often, until the milk is mostly absorbed (about 15 minutes). Add Nutmeg & Wine: Stir in the nutmeg and then the white wine. Simmer again until the wine is absorbed. Combine Tomatoes & Rinds: Stir in the crushed tomatoes and the parmesan rinds. Bring the sauce to a slow boil, then immediately reduce to a low simmer. Long Simmer: Leave the pot uncovered and let it simmer for about 3 hours. Stir every 10 minutes. (If the sauce gets too thick halfway through, add a splash of water.) Finish & Serve: Season with salt and pepper. Remove the cheese rinds before serving. Spoon the Bolognese over a hearty pasta like Rigatoni. • How tariffs can create buying opportunities
What do tariffs, long/short strategies, and robust market insights have in common? They’re the focus of the latest Trader Talk episode, where host Kenny Polcari and guest Tom Hayes, founder, chairman, and managing member of Great Hill Capital, dive into volatile market trends and actionable strategies for investors. Broadcasting from the iconic New York Stock Exchange, Polcari leverages decades of institutional trading experience to help you navigate market uncertainty amid shifting trade dynamics. Polcari opens by addressing how tariff headlines trigger investor panic—stocks fall and volatility spikes—despite tariffs being standard taxes on imported goods meant to protect domestic industries and bolster government revenues. Hayes explains that it’s not the tariffs themselves but the emotional responses they elicit that create opportunities. “Sell the rumor, buy the news,” he emphasizes, noting that market dislocations expose companies with strong pricing power and diversified supply chains. Hayes also shares his views on long/short strategies, comparing today’s market dynamics to past cycles. He highlights that after periods of political and economic shocks, international and emerging markets often rebound, offering attractive long-term prospects. Balancing fundamental analysis with technical indicators such as moving averages, RSI, and relative strength helps investors time entries and exits effectively. Later in the episode, Polcari wraps up with a culinary twist, sharing the backstory and recipe for his guest-favorite veal Parmesan—a beloved Italian-American dish that perfectly illustrates the art of smart investing. • Are Trump's new policies enough to keep the market afloat?
What do earnings season, rising interest rates, and a housing shortage have in common? They’re the focus of the latest Trader Talk episode, where host Kenny Polcari and guest Stephanie Link, Chief Investment Strategist at Hightower Advisors, tackle the biggest market trends and economic questions of 2025. Broadcasting live from the iconic New York Stock Exchange, Polcari leverages decades of institutional trading experience to help investors navigate market uncertainty, inflation pressures, and evolving GDP growth. Polcari kicks off the episode by emphasizing the importance of momentum trading—using tools like moving averages, RSI, MACD, and strict stop-loss orders—to capture rising assets and exit declining ones at the right moment. He explains that earnings reports provide a real-time economic pulse, shedding light on labor trends, inflation, and new product launches that are crucial for investors. Stephanie Link forecasts a GDP growth rate of 2 to 2.5% for 2025, noting that Trump’s pro-growth policies, lower taxes, and deregulation are driving optimism in the technology and manufacturing sectors. Despite the current environment with mortgage rates hovering near 7%, both experts agree that a drop to sub-5% levels could stimulate the housing market—a sector still grappling with a shortage of about 5 million homes. No Trader Talk episode is complete without a culinary twist. Polcari shares his Champagne Chicken recipe—a classic dish that, much like a balanced portfolio, combines precision with flavor. • No rate cuts? How to navigate inflation and market uncertainty
What do market whipsaws, Fed uncertainty, and a classic Italian stew have in common? They’re the focus of the latest Trader Talk episode, with host Kenny Polcari and guest John Lonski tackling the biggest economic questions of 2025. From inflation risks to consumer resilience, Polcari cuts through the noise to help investors stay ahead. In this episode, Polcari welcomes John Lonski, a seasoned economist and former Chief Economist at Moody’s, to break down shifting market sentiment. The two dive into the debate over Federal Reserve policy, with Polcari firmly in the camp that rate cuts are unlikely this year. Lonski agrees that inflation is creeping back, warning that continued GDP growth could push interest rates higher rather than lower. “We’re starting at full employment,” he explains. “If economic momentum holds, the Fed may have no choice but to keep rates steady—or even raise them.” As tariff speculation grows, Lonski views them as a strategic bargaining tool rather than an imminent economic threat. Meanwhile, strong corporate earnings and tight credit spreads suggest that businesses remain optimistic, reinforcing market stability. No Trader Talk episode is complete without a culinary touch. Be sure to check out Polcari's latest recipe for giambotta—a hearty Italian stew that, much like investing, is all about balance and patience.
