  • Benny Sawyer E30
Chris and Seb are back with an exhilarating new episode of the Slab Bodyboarding Podcast, Benny Sawyer, the champion of the 2024 Bodyboard King Shark Island Challenge. After a six-year hiatus, the renowned Shark Island Challenge made a triumphant return to the intense, shallow waters of Cronulla, near Sydney, New South Wales. This highly anticipated event drew the crème de la crème of the bodyboarding world. Legendary names like Jacob Romero, Jase Finlay, Tanner McDaniel, Lewy Finnegan, Pierre-Louis Costes, Jeff Hubbard, Jared Houston, Lily Pollard, Mike Stewart, Dave Winchester, and even surfer Noa Deane competed for the top spot. Despite the imperfect alignment of wind and swell, the competition delivered thrilling six-to-ten-foot surf, courtesy of a low-pressure system from Tasmania. This year's event featured exciting five-athlete heats, with the top contenders advancing to two semifinal matchups and then the grand final. The live broadcast was a hit, offering fans around the globe live commentary, heat winner interviews, multiple camera angles, and stunning drone shots. Thousands of spectators lined the Cronulla Esplanade, while others had a prime view from the break’s channel. Thanks to the jet ski crew, the event maintained a high level of safety, quickly addressing any light injuries and ensuring all riders were protected. The final heat was a showdown of local talent, including Andrew Lester, Marli Dunn, and the ultimate winner, Ben Sawyer, with an impressive performance from the outsider Michael Ostler. Sawyer not only clinched his first Shark Island Challenge title but also took home the Best Barrel award. Since its inception in 1997, the Shark Island Challenge has stood as a pinnacle of extreme bodyboarding. Tune in to hear Ben Sawyer recount his victory and share insights on what it took to conquer one of the sport’s most iconic events.

VEHEMENCE is the unholy intersection of board riding, punk rock and a visual world of artist expression. This is for the individuals who stick to their guns. For the people stay true to who they are. And who remain rebellious. Always. www.vehemenceco.com Hey there, wave riders! Do you remember the first time you caught that perfect wave? That rush of adrenaline, the pure stoke that kept you buzzing for days? Well, Chris from Slab Bodyboarding sure does. His story takes him from the sunny shores of Durban, South Africa, to the chilly waters of the UK, and it's a journey fueled by passion, perseverance, and a love for bodyboarding.Chris was just ten years old when he scored his first barrel on a cheap foam board from a dodgy seaside shop. Fast forward over 30 years, and that same stoke hits him every time he paddles out. After moving to the UK, Chris lost touch with the waves for almost a decade. But a chance find on Facebook reignited his passion. One wave at Croyde, Devon, was all it took to bring the froth flooding back.Since then, Chris has chased waves across the globe, from the Canary Islands to Morocco, South Africa, France, and Indonesia. He’s joined the Bristol Bodyboard Club, pulled into cold-water barrels in Devon, and tackled Welsh wedges. But there was one thing missing – apparel that proudly says, "I’m a bodyboarder."That's where Slab Bodyboarding comes in. Born from the passion of real bodyboarders, Slab Bodyboarding apparel connects you to the culture and the community you love. Whether you're squeezing into your wetsuit for a dawn patrol or reminiscing about epic trips with friends, Slab has got you covered. So, if you’re ready to wear your stoke with pride, head over to Instagram and follow @SlabBodyboarding. My love affair with waves began as a fourteen-year-old boy on the rugged swell sucking beaches of Western Australia. I was so pumped full of adrenaline after my first surf that I could not sleep. In this moment, I realised that ocean life was for me. The only snag in my plan was that I lived on the South Coast of England (nowhere near any world class waves) and was particularly good at another sport; rugby. Good enough to be picked up by Saracens RFC. That’s when things got a little dark - I broke my leg and dislocated my ankle in a pre-season warm-up game and that was that - professional rugby career done. I then went into business for twelve years, which I greatly enjoyed and became obsessed by. I lost sight of who I really was and what kind of life I wanted to live. I longed for the ocean life that I’d visualised as a boy. So, I moved to Newquay ten years ago, became a model and started surfing everyday. In 2019, I decided to take it more seriously, with a simple objective to become Britain’s best bodyboarder. I am currently ranked 7th in England.
